Mass Academy Students Recognized as Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program

September 19, 2024

Seventeen students from the Mass Academy of Math and Science at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) have been recognized as “National Merit Commended Students” in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.  A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented to these scholastically talented students.

The students are Hartej Anand (Framingham), Samhitha Bodangi (Shrewsbury), Sophia Caramanica (Westborough), Derek Desrosiers (Attleboro Falls), Edward Goodwin (Sturbridge), Kruthi Gundu (Shrewsbury), Shivani Gupta (Shrewsbury), Anika Karre (Shrewsbury), Isha Nagireddy (Shrewsbury), Lindsey Paradise (Dudley), Rishi Patel (Shrewsbury), Gustavo Rodriguez (Holden), Rohan Sarikonda (Shrewsbury), Timothy Schowalter (Holden), Maya Sushkin (Worcester), Palak Yadav (Medway), and Ethan Zhou (Harvard).

“We continue to be extraordinarily proud of the accomplishments of these and all Mass Academy students. Their drive, curiosity, perseverance, passion for learning, and willingness to face challenges head-on are truly inspiring. This recognition of the students’ scholastic achievement is a testament to the support and education provided to our students by their families, their sending schools, Mass Academy, and WPI,” states Mass Academy Director Anne Ludes.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic progress.  Although they will not continue in the 2025 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers who entered the 2025 competition by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC.  “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation.  We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
