Mass Academy Juniors Compete in Modeling the Future Challenge

March 21, 2024

The Modeling the Future Challenge (MTFC), a program of The Actuarial Foundation, is a unique, project-based competition that encourages students to harness the power of data analytics and mathematical modeling to tackle real-world problems. Participants use cross-curricular skills and engage in collaborative efforts to make predictions about pressing topics like climate change, healthcare, technology and recommend solutions to affected stakeholders.

All Mass Academy Juniors competed in this Challenge, working in teams of five. In December, each team submitted a project proposal to MTFC on a topic of their choosing, in which they implemented the five steps in the Actuarial Process. The Challenge has been extremely competitive with a total of 267 teams entering from 35 different states. Only the teams that demonstrated exceptional potential for an actuarial research project were invited to the Project Phase of the Challenge. All 10 Mass Academy teams were declared Semi-Finalists and moved onto the Project Phase!

Out of the 152 Semifinalist Teams that competed in Project Phase, 15 teams were selected as Finalists. This included one of Mass Academy’s Teams! Congratulations to Risky Business – Lindsey Paradise, Derek Desrosiers, Sophia Caramanica, Heidy Rodriguez and Anthony DeRosa!

Risky Business will now advance to the final round of the Modeling the Future Challenge, where they will submit their final reports and present their project to a distinguished panel of judges to compete for $60,000 in scholarship prizes. The team is gearing up for this exciting opportunity and is eager to showcase their hard work and interesting findings.
